Choosing the right private accommodation
Learnt from our previous experiences and mistakes, we would like to provide you some of the tips and precations on choosing the right private accommodations in Liverpool.
Pay close attention to them as accommodation is one of the most important things during your times in Liverpool. Do it wrong and you might not enjoy your times in Liverpool to the fullest.
01
Check for the bills and quota.
Often than not, students only realized that certain bills (gas, water, electricity, internet, TV licence) are not covered by the agent or landlord when they reach here. Always ask whether the rent covered the various bills.
The next thing you MUST ask is whether they put a quota on your bills. This means even if your bills are covered by the rent, when your usage exceed the quota, you will be charged on the rates set by your landlord or agent.
Compare prices between agencies.

There are plenty of agencies in Liverpool tailored for student accommodation. Check on our website for some of the recommended agencies by our society. Compare the prices around until you get the price you are happy with. For indicative purpose, £60 per week (inclusive of bills) is considered one of the cheapest you could get in Liverpool.

03
Get friends and rent the whole property.
Try to get a few of your close friends and rent the whole property which can accommodate all of you. By doing this you could skip the never ending politics between the flatmates\housemates since you all tend to know each other more back in Malaysia. You might even love your friends more after staying together for 9 months.
Homesick is bad enough so try to make this second one in Liverpool feels better than a hotel.
Check for any online reviews by previous tenants.

If possible, try to google for any reviews by previous tenants on particular agency you are interested with. They might no provide the most accurate information but they could give you a rough picture on the quality of services provided by the agency. You could always ask the agency some hypothetical questions inspired by any bad reviews, and see how they explain themselves so you get to know both side of the story.

05
Never assume anything is free.
Perhaps from our local culture, we tend to assume for something trivial to be free. In United Kingdom, hardly anything is free. Ask your landlord or agent whenever you get some services or products, whether they are free or otherwise. You definitely will not want to receive an unexpected charge, not in sterling pounds.
06
Get a bicycle.
Although this is totally optional, it is advisable to get a decent bicycle (£100-200) for first or second year students. Everything in Liverpool will be in cycling distance and a biycle can save you taxi fares more than you could imagine. Invest in a good bicycle will get you around fast and free. You can always sell it with a decent price when you finish your study in Liverpool.
